A Crack In th Edge of th World
70% OFF SALE. Though the epicenter of this marvelously constructed book is San Francisco, Winchester covers much more than just the disaster. He discusses how this particular quake led to greater scientific study of quakes in an attempt to understand the movements of the earth. Trained at Oxford University as a geologist, Winchester is well qualified to discuss the subject, and he clearly explains plate tectonics theory (first introduced in 1968) and the creation of the San Andreas Fault, along with the geologic exploration of the American West in the late 19th century and the evolution of technology used to measure and predict earthquakes. He also covers the social and political shifts caused by the disaster, such as the way that Pentecostalists viewed the quake as "a message of divine approval" and used it to recruit new members into the church, and the rise in the local Chinese population. With many records destroyed in the fire, there was no way to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. Filled with eyewitness accounts, vivid descriptions, crisp prose, and many delightful meanderings, A Crack in the Edge of the World is a thoroughly absorbing tale. The paper cover opens to a poster size image of the newspaper headlines and photographs of April 19, 1906 REGULAR PRICE $27.95

A Rage for Justice
HALF PRICE SALE. This political biography of Phillip Burton (1926-1983) is the riveting story of one of the most brilliant, driven, and productive legislators of his or indeed any era of American politics. A ruthless and unabashed progressive, Burton terrified his opponents, ran over his friends, forged improbable coalitions, and from 1964 to 1983 became one of the most influential Representatives in the House. He also acquired more raw power than almost any left-liberal politician ever had.
Moving from grassroots campaigns to epic battles in the California state capital, and finally to the very pinnacle of power on Capitol Hill, John Jacobs's inside account of Burton's life shows how politics really works. He demonstrates the exercise of power in the hands of a superb strategist and shows an unheralded master going about his life's work during the glory years of American liberalism. Hardcover. Dear People: Remembering Jones
OVER 20% OFF. On November 18, 1978, over nine hundred expatriate Americans died in Jonestown, Guyana, along with a U.S. congressman and members of the press. The deaths of the members of Peoples Temple stunned the nation, and to this day a single aerial photograph taken at the time remains indelibly etched in our minds, a horrifying pile of corpses lying in a clearing in the South American jungle.
We have forgotten how the people of Jonestown lived: that they once walked among us as neighbors and friends. They were a community that embraced racial equality and social justice and that won the praise and support of some of our most notable leaders.
Dear People challenges perceived notions of the Jonestown tragedy, presenting letters, personal histories, reports, newspaper articles, photographs, and other documents, many published here for the first time from the Peoples Temple Collection of the California Historical Society. Dear People is a companion to The People?s Temple, a play directed by Leigh Fondakowski. Paperback. REGULAR PRICE $16.95.
