About TJ's Custom Castings
We are a family run resin model making business looking to provide the highest quality products to the model hobby enthusiast. Our company consists of me, Tom, my dad (Tim), and my brother (Tim II). Additionally, we have partners that we can use to produce large quantities of hard tooled products as well; however 90% of what we produce is designed by us and created using resin and our high quality model making process. Every resin model that we produce is made, removed from the mold, inspected and cleaned: all by hand. This ensures that only the highest quality model part is ever delivered to our customers.
Ok, so how did we get started? Here's a brief history: All three of us here at TJ's have had a passion for model car building since we were very young; just like most people that are into building models. Our dad is a mechanic, well that is an understatement, he can do anything from body work, engine rebuilds, customization, etc. And Tim and I were always looking forward to "helping" him in the garage, although most of the time we got in the way more than we helped. :)
Our dad began racing cars at Dorney Park Speedway in the 1970's, when Tim and I were both very young, and we both became more interested in modifying the car models to look like our dad's cars instead of the "out of the box" stock bodies. This included paint jobs, creating our own "nerf bars", and making weird "out of this world" modifications with "bondo" and styrene sheets. Needless to say none of the cars that we produced when we were younger would ever stand the rigors of physics or ever make it to a production line (think 17 foot fins on a 68 Mustang) ;).
Again, we were never satisfied with the "out of the box" kits, and began creating our own parts or modifying bodies to make them look the way we wanted them to look. This lead to more and more customization and less "out of the box" parts from the kits. Eventually I got into over types of car models, other than old school stock cars, and into IMCA dirt modifieds, 358's, and got the idea that if I wanted these parts, then others may want them too. This is how TJ's Custom Casting's started. I used so many different methods throughout the years to create the parts, but the quality was never what I wanted or expected in a resin / plastic cast part. Each casting always resulted in too much flashing and required way too much time to clean each part after I made it. So, I tinkered with a few different ways to create models and over the years, in 2005 I believe, I evolved the process that we currently use today. This process allows us to cast all of our parts (including our complicated chasiss!) from a single mold, and very little, if any, flashing and cleanup.
This process is how we are able to create such high quality parts at highly competitive prices! The molded products require so little cleanup when they come out of the mold that we don't need to spend more than a couple minutes to inspect and cleanup each part. This savings in time allows us to give you our high quality at awesome prices. That's the story of how TJ's came to be, we hope that you enjoy using our parts in your models as much as we enjoy producing the parts. If you have any questions about TJ's or want to compliment us or complain, please call or email. Happy modelling!
