A fabulous theme and variations in the style of Arban, but with a Brittish twist. This is a fine selection from the turn-of-the-century reperotire and the tmepos can be modified to suit just about any ability level. It can have a nice relaxed feeling or played at very brisk tempos to leave the audience in awe. Enjoy.

The Gaelic Sonata was composed for Adam Frey in late 2002. Premiered in February 2003, the composer says the following about the work: “Folk song has proved a rich seam from which generations of composers have mined lustrous gems. Perhaps no source sparkles with quite the gleaming brilliance of Gaelic melody. The Gaelic Sonata is in three standard movements: sonata-allegro, song form, and rondo.
The sonata also tells a story of sorts: I - A Youth, possessed of restless dreams of accomplishment, purposes to seek Adventure Afar, despite the admonitions of Age and Experience and the entreaties of the girl next door (who secretly loves him dearly). II - He leaves nonetheless, only to discover that “adventure” includes spells of loneliness, doubt, and regret –even in the midst of boisterous comrades. III - With mind and heart improved, the enlightened youth returns to find that much his heart had sought elsewhere was in truth waiting for him at home.
One of the standards in the Baroque transcription repertoire for the euphonium. This edition includes both an ornament-free solo part and one with the ornaments used by the editor. This will allow the performer to see how a Baroque piece may be ornamented while having the option to compose their own ornaments and make use of the ones in the ornamented part. One of the best aspects of this piece is that it can easily be adapted for a wide range of playing levels by altering the amount of ornamentation.
A beautiful and lovely melodic work that really features the strong points of the euphonium. Mikles is a young composer and this work is superb. Program notes below as well as a full live recording by a student performer.
Program Notes:
A young composer and arranger, Martin primarily performs on trombone and euphonium. As an undertaking for his course study at Georgia State University, he composed The Journey Home, a musical depiction of the parable of the Prodigal Son, for a final project.
The story of the Prodigal Son is found in Luke 15:11-32. Jesus tells the story of a man who has two sons. The younger son demands his share of his inheritance while his father is still living, and goes off to a far away country where he "wastes his substance with riotous living." He eventually has to take work as a swine herder, which is a very form of employment as swine are not kosher in Judaism). While enduring this work, he becomes aware of his wasted time and decides to return home. There, he throws himself on his father's mercy. But when he arrives, his father greets him warmly and barely allows him to tell his tales of troubled times and express his repentance; the father even kills a "fatted calf" to celebrate his return (this was a sign of great celebration). The story continues with the older brother becoming jealous at the favored treatment of his faithless brother and upset at the lack of reward for his own faithfulness. Martin is an avid brass band enthusiast and participates regularly in brass bands of The Salvation Army.
David Morgan's Shapes of the Morning for Euphonium and Piano explores the lyrical side of the euphonium. A plaintive melody in the euphonium is accompanied by impressionistic harmony in the piano part.

Diversions by Richard Prior intentionally creates an exuberant mood with a playful, rhythmic complexity, and jazz-driven harmonies. The piece provides a forum for the euphonium and piano to explore spiky, incisive gestures as well as soaring, intimate moments of lyricism. Written in 2006 and dedicated to Adam Frey, Diversions is a tour de force of virtuosity, moods and characterizations, even extending to a Latin dance section.
A GREAT piece that really challenges the player mentally and its rhythmic complexity is a wonderful joy to master.
A name familiar to all music lovers, Giacomo Puccini wrote some of the worlds most beautiful and moving melodies. Nessun Dorma from Turandot is arguably his most famous aria with very memorable performances by Pavarotti and "The Three Tenors." This wonderful song gives the euphonium a chance to sing to its fullest tone quality, intensity, and lyricism. This edition incorporates the articulation of the Italian lyrics.
One of the most memorable and haunting melodies from the pen of Sergi Rachmaninov. His Vocalise stands as a famous work along side his Piano Concerto No.2 and his Variations on a Theme by Paginni. The lush harmonies and melodies culminate in this most appealing work that conveys his longing to return to his homeland. One of the best known pieces of music and an extremely valuable study of phrasing.

The Sonata for Euphonium and Piano was commissioned by the internationally renowned euphonium soloist, Adam Frey, for premiere at the International Euphonium Institute, held at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, in June of 2007. As is often the case with today's technology, I was first introduced to Adam through a colleague by means of e-mail communication, and the creation of a new piece was discussed mostly through brief notes back and forth.
The piece is in the standard three movement presentation. The first movement is the heaviest of the three, hovering around B Minor most of the time, and experimenting with different usages of various four-note patterns. It is written as a brisk march, and harmonically evokes Mahlerian imagery with the use of a raised 7th over a minor chord. (This may be directly related to having heard of a recent Mahler Symphony No. 7 performance with which Adam was involved. Maybe not - it's hard to say!) The second movement is a response to the disquiet raised in the first. It is the simplest of songs, meant to feature the euphonium’s elegant lyrical playing and beautiful sound. The piano part is almost minimalist mid-way through the movement, as I hoped to create tension through simplicity. The third movement is a semi-Rondo. The opening theme (antecedent / consequent) is repeated throughout, usually slightly varied, with the bulk of the movement being dedicated to an angular and disjunct digression. Generally, it is light-hearted and provides a D Major resolution to the B Minor tension presented in the 1st Movement.
Typical of sonata writing, the piano part is of equal importance, and the piece is meant to provide equal challenges and rewards for both players. It is dedicated to Adam Frey with appreciation for his continued support of contemporary composers through commissioning new works and thoughtful first-rate performances thereof.
A fantastic new chamber work for euphonium, tuba, and piano. The work highlights 4 moods of South American music across 3 movements. The work features some challenging double tonguing passages and modern techniques such as: tapping the instrument, blowing air through the instrument, and lip beats). The composition has excellent audience appeal and is great fun for the soloist.
This new work from the Ohio based composer contains a very beautiful melody that briefly transports the audience. It was performed at the New Works Recital at IEI 2005 and offered to be published. Its length of 3 minutes makes it a great addition and something to be enjoyed. The composer states that the work has a Romantic film score sound.
These 6 Canonic Sonatas represent some of the most unique works in the instrumental repertoire. The overall concept involves two players performing the works in a “round.” Player #1 begins the work and once they reach the symbol, Player #2 starts playing at the beginning of the piece. In this way, player #2 chases player #1 until the end of each movement where there are two fermatas. Player #1 ignores the first fermata and plays until the last bar. Player #2 will utilize the earlier fermata so both parts will conclude together.
These are INCREDIBLY fun to explore and can be used as solo pieces or as a duet. They are so multi-faceted!!
'Armenia' is from the Relentless Grooves series by tuba-virtuoso, Sam Pilafian. This four movement work is a great opportunity for instrumentalists to perform ethnic music with the indigenous percussion instruments of the country or region that is being depicted. The CD accompaniments provided include multiple versions of the more technical movements. The fastest tempo presented is usually optimal for performance, however the slower "rehearsal" tracks can also be used in performance, especially in 'live' acoustical situations.
Relentless Grooves: Armenia is a study in the music of the Armenian people from Pagan times until the modern era. The composition is written in four sections to depict images that are strong in Armenian life. Armenia challenges the performer to depict drama, history, sadness, and elation in ten minutes using melodic and harmonic material that spans nearly 2,000 years!
