Cherry Classics-Mantia, Simone - The Trombone Virtuoso, an Advanced Method Book
Simone Mantia's "Trombone Virtuoso" was one of the most important method books for the instrument in the mid 20th Century. Many major Trombonists used this book as young artists, finding it added greatly to their progress on the instrument. Mantia's method book covers all clefs, keys and techniques necessary for a sound footing on the Trombone. Although some of the styles in the book may seem dated, they were in vogue at the time. Mantia performed with the Metropolitan Opera Company for many years and was for quite a while, its Personnel Manager, coming across hundreds of top instrumentalists who migrated and lived in New York City. As a young performer, he was also a leading soloist with the Sousa band and toured with it throughout North America. Cherry Classics is proud to present this work in its original format as the first publication in our "Vintage Brass Series". We will be adding more to this series in the future. Marcello's Six Sonatas have become a mainstay of the Trombone literature. This masterful critical edition of Sonatas 1-3 (the final 3 will be published in late 2008) by Professor Mike Hall of Old Dominion University includes a descriptive booklet of his own suggestions for Baroque ornamenation based on his studies of the period. This usually dry area is brought alive by Professor Hall, with easy to use written out examples of trills, embellishments, etc. The actual Trombone part includes an extra blank staff for the soloist's own ornamentation markings based on Professor Hall's instructions.
This edition is a must for the serious performer.

Ian McDougall is one of Canada's leading composers as well as being an internationally recognized jazz legend of the Trombone. Dated within the last six months of the composer's life, the Ave Verum Corpus, K. 168 is a profound example of the unrivaled beauty, elegance and simplicity of Mozart's style. It is a stand-alone choral work based on a sacred Latin text, probably written for a Corpus Christi service in Baden, near Vienna.
Often cited as one of Mozart's most ?perfect? works, it?s sublimity inspired the following remarks from Albert Einstein: ?the perfection of modulation and part-writing, lightly introducing polyphony as a final intensification, (is) no longer perceived. Here...ecclesiastical and personal elements flow together. The problem of style is solved.?
Originally scored for four-part chorus (SATB), organ and strings, this arrangement preserves the original key and markings; the only additions are the ?molto cantabile? marking in the solo voice and the suggested metronome marking of q=80.

A new suite in 4 movements (including the famous 3 chord Fanfare) from Mozart's Magic Flute opera beautifully set for Trombone Quartet and Bass Trombone Solo or Bass Vocalist. The total work is about 10 minutes in length and is for moderately advanced players (good high school and up). The most famous of the movements is "Sarastro's Aria" which can be performed by a Bass Trombone (5th part) or Bass vocalist. The lyrics are in the original German and the movement is in the key of F (original). The Suite is of moderately advanced difficulty, in tenor and bass clefs. Endurance is not a problem. The highest note is a single high "C" in the 1st Trombone part. The other movements are delightful in beautiful choral style and will add depth to any recital or concert.

This famous aria from Mozart's final opera, the Magic Flute is beautifully transcribed by Russ Schultz. Originally thought to be composed for two Horns, the Twelve Duos K. 487 have been transcribed for two Trombones by Ralph Sauer, retired Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Sauer has set them into three sets of keys. 1-4 are in F, 5-8 are in G and 9-12 are in A, giving the performers a nice mix of keys. This also makes three sets of Duos that can be used in recital if desired. The Duos can be performed by moderately advanced players, the 1st part being in tenor clef. The 2nd part can be played by a tenor or bass Trombone.

Nielsen's very early work, Opus 2 was originally written for Oboe and Piano and has been beautifully arranged for Trombone and Piano by Ralph Sauer. The first movement is titled "Romance" and is lush and very expressive. The second movement is a lively and bouncy Humoresque that ends in a whisper. This work is for advanced performers and runs about 7 minutes in length.
