Cherry Classics-Prokofiev-Five Songs Without Words for Tuba and Piano, Opus 35
The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire. The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Alvarez has scored these songs beautifully for the Tuba and Piano.

Fantasy Piece is an early work of Rachmaninoff, part of a grouping of five short pieces called Morceau de Fantasie One of his most famous works, the Prélude in C-sharp minor is from this same group of music. Opus 3 , No. 3 is also sometimes referred to as the Melody in E major. It's slow tempo allows the mood of the work to reach a giant climax. The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Low Brass world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Trombone Concerto with Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of that Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile. Mr. Sauer works his editing magic to the 4 1/2 minute work. For advanced performers.

Cherry Classics-Russell, Armand - Diversità for Trombone Quartet
Diversità, means variety in Italian, and refers to the relationships between the movements. The five movements contrast alternating fast and slow movements. The three fast movements (1, 3, and 5) are almost scherzo-like with their brief crises and prevailing positive dispositions including unflagging energy. The two interspersed slow movements are dissimilar. Movement two is quite serious with a melancholy effect. Movement four begins and ends with passages using contrasting mutes creating an element of mystery surrounding a middle section that has a strong central climax. The contrasting treatment of these five movements reflects the diversity connoted in the title while an essential unifying spirit is found in the frequently encountered scherzo element. This work is about 15 minutes in length for advanced performers. It can be the major work on your recital or concert program.

Cherry Classics-Saint Saëns, Camille ¿ The Nightingale (Le Rossignol) for Euphonium & Piano
Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saën's incidental orchestral music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4 minute work is all about mood. Mr. Sauer uses the original key of B-flat, which lays perfectly for all of the "bird-like" calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.
