Cherry Classics-Satie, Erik - Six Gnossiennes for Euphonium and Piano
Satie’s strange but beautiful pieces were composed in the 1890’s and were notated without barlines or time signatures. The Six Gnossiennes consist of mysterious, hypnotic melodies supported by simple chord structures that are full of cryptic comments such as ”counsel yourself carefully” and ”be clairvoyant.” There are few restrictions on interpretation. Mr. Sauer’s beautiful arrangements of these six short works total about 15 minutes in length and are suitable for advanced performers.

Satie's iconic Gymnopédie No. 1 has been beautifully transcribed for 6 part Trombone Ensemble by Michael McGuire of Bones West. This work is about 4 minutes in length. The 1st part is for advanced performers, but the other 5 parts can be performed by intermediate players. Satie sets a very melancholy scene with his revolutionary chords. This is the only version of this work available for Trombone ensemble, a welcome addition to the repertoire.

Cherry Classics-Schubert-Auf dem Strom for Trombone, Horn & Piano..
Franz Schubert was the master composer of the German Art Song or Lied. Auf dem Strom (On the River) was written in 1828, just a year after Beethoven's death. With the performance of this and other works at a concert promoting his music, Schubert reached the zenith of his popularity in a career which was tragically cut short only a little while later. Mr. Sauer has beautifully transcribed this work in the key of E-flat (original key of E major) for Trombone, Horn & Piano. The Trombone performs the Tenor voice part of the trio. The lyrics of the poem, written by Ludwig Rellstab have been included with the score to better allow the performers an understanding of soul of the work. About 7 minutes in length for advanced performers. This transcription was first performed by Ralph Sauer and Hornist Stefan Dohr (Berlin Philharmonic) at the Melbourne International Festival of Brass.

Cherry Classics-Schutz-Psalm 1 for Trombone Quartet and Organ
Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) , is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available.
As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.)
Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. He holds a Master?s in Musicology from The American University

Valse Triste is taken from the music that Sibelius wrote for a drama called "Kuolema" or "Death". The shortened version of the story goes something like this: It is nighttime and a dying Mother is being watched over by her son who eventually falls asleep and dreams. In the dream, the Mother, dressed in a ballroom gown begins to dance a very slow dance. More and more people enter the ballroom to dance with the Mother, but they will not look her in the eye. The dancing becomes more and more animated, with all gyrating around the room in a wild rhythm. Suddenly the doors fling wide open, the Mother cries out, the guests vanish and Death stands on the threshold. Mr. Sauer has arranged this work to bring out the subtleties of the colors of this strange, but enchanting music.
