A great transcription of Bach's "Dorian Toccata" BWV 538 for Trombone Octet by Ralph Sauer, Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Sauer's scoring for this work shows his great skill as a "Bach Brass Expert". Instrumentation is for 6 Tenors (parts 1-5 in tenor clef, 6th in bass) and 2 Bass trombones. Range goes to a high "D" for the 1st part in the final bars. Otherwise, range is moderate with no heavy endurance problems. This piece bounces along at a good clip and shows off technique & precise ensemble. A great choice for advanced performers.
The Toccata in e minor comes from the keyboard Partita, BWV 830 first published in 1731. This work is not only grand in length, but also in expression having a very serious tone. Originally for solo voice and piano, this work has been traditional sung by men's chorus. Dr. Hanson's transcription is true to the score and has a wonderful timbre to it. Beethoven's only original work in the original key, for trombone quartet has been edited by Gordon Cherry. This three movement work is short but serious and shows the Master's genius with glorious chorale writing for the instrument.
Beethoven's great genius shows through in this marvelous new transcription by Ralph Sauer. Trio, Opus 87 is actually an early work although given a later opus for some reason. It's four movments: Allegro, Adagio cantabile, Scherzo and Presto work so well for the Trombone Trio, you would hardly know it was originally written for two Oboes and English Horn. Johannes Brahms is known for his serious, complex, large works, however some of his most cherished compositions are the small scale ones that became popular immediately. The Hungarian Dance No. 6 is lively, seductive and full of mischief. The contrasting tempos and stop-start rhythms are the most notable parts of the work. Mike Wall, former Horn player with the Vancouver Symphony has written a great transcription for advanced performers. Instrumentation is for Trumpet in B-flat, Horn and Trombone. .
Brahms wrote three sets of Motets. This Motet, Opus 74, No. 2 composed in the early 1860’s is taken from text written by Friedrich Spee (1591-1635), inspired from the Hebrew bible. The Motet is often performed at Advent by Catholic and Protestant church choirs. With much of Brahms’ choral music, there is exceptional harmonic beauty and counterpoint which was influenced greatly by Bach. Mr. Sauer has done an exceptional job of scoring this work for four part choir of advanced performers.
The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or ?manufactured? by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the ?stamp? of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms?s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of ?C? treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breathe marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.

Mr. Sauer has done a beautiful job scoring these works for Trombone. There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the "Great War", WW I. Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.
