Chicken Scratch-15 Two-Part Inventions by J.S. Bach
Tuba players often can only dig into the music of J.S. Bach in brass quintets or some of the Stokowski or other transcriptions for orchestra or wind band. These 15 duets while advanced, make for excellent study materials that are every bit as musically rewarding as the Rochut/Bordogni etudes.

Chicken Scratch-48 Low Register Studies for Tuba
These studies were written as a means for developing not only a solid, good-sounding low register, but also as a means of developing one’s skills at reading music with multiple ledger lines. While this book is by no means intended to be thought of as a substitute for practicing Bordogni studies down two octaves, it does give the player a chance to spend time in an oft-neglected area of tuba playing: the low (pedal) register.

Chicken Scratch-Blue Bells of Scotland Arthur Pryor (Arr. Childs) - Tuba and Piano E Flat Version
This is a traditional turn-of-the-(twentieth)century, theme and variations, Sunday afternoon, concert-in-the-park solo. The one word that people should at least be mumbling if not shouting by the end of the performance is “amazing!” Basically, the Theme should show off your best cantabile sound and style with lots of rubati and espressivo. The Variations should be impressive with their increasing complexity as they move from triplets to sixteenths, but be sure that the speed is not too fast until you reach the third variation. The cadenza between Variation II and Variation III may be re-written but it should show off as much of the tessitura and other technical prowess abilities (yeah, and gimmicks) that you have. This version is for E Flat Tuba and has parts in both bass and treble clef.
"I have had requests for music recorded both on "Tuba Tracks" and my "Big Boy" discs for some time. Micky Wrobleski's very clear and readable compilation of some of these arrangements are gradually being released so other tuba players may have the opportunity of playing some if this music as well." - Gene Pokorny

Chicken Scratch-Chorale Prelude on "Mo Li Hua" for Brass Choir by Micky Wrobleski
The Chinese love their folk songs. In the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, one of the more popular encores we play is the folk song "Mo Li Hua" or, "Jasmine Flower". Using this tune, I created this work for brass choir. It features each section of the brass choir and highly effective as the last piece on the first half, a second half opener, or an encore.

Chicken Scratch-Locus Iste by Anton Bruckner for Three Trombones and Tuba arr by Micky Wrobleski
As tuba (or low brass) players, we are all very familiar with the symphonies of Anton Bruckner. However, many of us never delve a little deeper to discover some of his wonderful choral music. As with the de Victoria, it works well with various combinations of instruments. This setting of Locus Iste, for four tubas, was commissioned by Mr. Blair Berger for a recital while a student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Chicken Scratch-O Magnum Mysterium for Tuba Quartet arr by Micky Wrobleski
O magnum mysterium by Tomas Luis de Victoria is one of my favorite pieces of choral music. The piece works well for 2 euphoniums and 2 tubas, three trombones and tuba, four tubas or trombone quartet. Intonation and steadiness of internal rhythm are paramount. Many thanks to Dr. Anne Heider of Roosevelt University to opening my eyes to this wonderful piece (among others!) of our musical history.

Chicken Scratch-Reflected Projections for Solo Tuba
"Reflected Projections for Solo Tuba" was written for Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Tubist, Gene Pokorny. This is very lyrical and highly expressive piece filled with several mood changes from rage to serenity that works well as the centerpiece of the first or second half of a recital.

Chicken Scratch-Skirmish for Brass Quintet
"Skirmish for Brass Quintet" was written for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet. It opens up with a relentless line in the tuba which leads to each voice entering in turn leading you to the melody first stated by the trumpets which takes you, tumultuously to a peaceful slow section with the melody state by the French horn. The tuba draws this section to a close ending on a pedal A, then the trumpets interrupt and bring back the opening melody which drives the piece to a fiery finale!
